McFarlane and Partners Pty Ltd was established in 1986. The firm specialises in structural engineering for apartment buildings, institutional buildings, aged care facilities and similar buildings including hotel buildings. The firm has extensive design experience for buildings up to eight stories in height using various construction materials including steel framing, masonry, concrete and timber. We are regularly involved in the structural design for individual houses including very large multi-level architecturally designed residences. The firm also has extensive geotechnical experience including the design of earth embankment dams.
McFarlane & Partners has a proven track record for producing cost effective rational designs and accurate detailed documentation. Computer systems are used for detailed structural analysis and to allow appraisals of design options. All structural drawings are produced using computer aided drafting facilities and a high standard of documentation is consistently maintained.
John McFarlane – Director
John is an experienced Structural Engineer having been the Principal Engineer for a firm of Consulting Engineers since 1986. He is a founding member and past Chairman of the Foundation and Footings Society of Victoria (FFSV). He is also a Life Member of the Association of Consulting Structural Engineers Victoria (ACSEV) and a past President of the ACSEV.
John has extensive experience in geotechnical investigations for residential construction and extensive experience in the design and assessment of residential footing systems for reactive clay foundation soils. His Master of Engineering Degree was at Swinburne University of Technology where he was involved in the research on the performance of residential slabs and footings for reactive clay soils. John was employed as a Geotechnical Engineer early in his career, later specialising in the geotechnical and structural engineering design.
John was a member of the Advisory Panel (representing FFSV) for a recently completed three year research programme at Swinburne University. This research programme included four PhD candidates and was looking at all aspects related to the analysis and design of footing systems for reactive clay soils.
John also provides Expert Witness Services with experience in providing reports for VCAT, The County Court and The Supreme Court. John also provides specialist engineering services for the assessment of protection works.
Craig Newbegin – Senior Structural Engineer
Craig joined McFarlane & Partners in 1989. Throughout his time at the company, Craig has excelled in his role as lead design engineer, overseeing numerous projects including educational buildings, age care facilities, and residential construction.
Troy Villani – Senior Draftsperson
Troy Villani has been working for McFarlane & Partners for almost 20 years. Troy is an experienced CAD draftsperson and is responsible for the co-ordination of all structural drawings. He has a keen eye for detail and is able to create precise and accurate technical drawings for a wide range of projects.
Robyn Wilson – Accounts Support
Robyn is a member of our account support team. She joined McFarlane & Partners in 2017 and helps with all accounting queries.
Diane Zhajlo – Administration Support
Diane helps keep the office running smoothly. She assists with administrative duties.
Michael Derrick – Engineer
Michael is a highly skilled and experienced structural design engineer who has been a valuable asset to McFarlane & Partners since joining the company in 2014. He has successfully completed numerous projects.
Dianna Maniotis – Draftsperson
Dianna joined McFarlane & Partners in 2014 and is a structural CAD draftsperson, also providing administrative support. Dianna ensures that the office runs smoothly and efficiently.
Gabriella Klonis – Undergraduate Engineer
Gabriella is a motivated student and joined McFarlane & Partners in 2022 part time. Gabriella provides the McFarlane & Partner’s office with her skills in CAD drafting and administration support. In addition to her drafting skills, Gabriella also attends site visits as a technical field officer.
